Go Bucks, Beat Michigan Day 3

As promised a few days ago I will tell you a little about the traditions involved in Beat Michigan Week.

There are many traditions that take place during this week all over the city. Things like pep rallies, dinner, lunches, breakfasts, dances and concerts. There really are so many of those types of things that I couldn't even begin to cover them here.

So instead I am going to talk about a few things that I think are the important ones.

First up is a concert the Ohio State Marching Band holds every year during this week. This of course is just something that is fun but I had to mention it.

Second is the annual 5k run for charity. This race is held the Sunday before the game and it kicks off the Beat Michigan week.

Third is the Battle Against Hunger. Each year OSU students and Michigan students collect non perishable items for their local food banks. The school that has the largest amount in weight wins.

Fourth is the Beat Michigan Blood Drive that pits each school against each other to see which school can get the most blood donors to donate blood to the American Red Cross.

The last thing I am going to talk about is the one thing that actually involves the game itself. This tradition is known as The Gold Pants. Back in 1934 after Francis Schmidt had accepted the head coaching position for the Buckeyes he was asked how he was going to handle the Michigan Wolverines. His answer to this was "They put their pants on one leg at a time same as everybody else." Since then every time the Buckeyes beat the Wolverines the Buckeye players are awarded a pair of gold pants charms. I grew up knowing about the Gold Pants but in 2000 I learned something else about them. When a player receives his first pair of Gold Pants that player is supposed to give them to his mother. I'll just put this out their now but I would so love to have a pair of those Gold Pants. Another interesting fact about the Gold Pants is that Michigan coach BO Schembechler had a pair of Gold Pants that he had received during is time at Ohio State.

Tomorrow I will share with you the most memorable game for me.
